A Case for Fractal Traac Modeling

چکیده
| Developments in telecommunications technology have outpaced progress in teletraac methods and practices. As a result, the planning and dimensioning of even the latest information-age services is, by default, commonly done on the basis of classical teletraac methods developed for circuit switched voice networks. In this paper, we will discuss recent traac measurement studies which have demonstrated that measured traac streams from working packet switched networks exhibit variations and uctuations over a wide range of time scales. We motivate the application of fractal models to parsimoniously represent this apparent complexity of actual network traac, illustrate some immediate beneets that arise from moving beyond traditional traac model-ing concepts and accepting the idea of the fractal nature of network traac dynamics, and discuss the use of frac-tal models to develop traac management methods that are accurate, practical, and based on a solid understanding of the traac observed in \real-life" packet switched networks.

Point Process Approaches for Modeling and Analysis of Self-similar Traac: Part Ii { Applications
In previous work 24], Fractal Point Processes (FPPs) have been proposed as novel tools for understanding, modeling and analyzing diverse types of self-similar traac behavior. We apply the FPP models in the context of network traac modeling and performance analysis. Two qualitatively diierent fractal data sets (Bellcore Ethernet traces) are characterized by FPP models. Comparison of model-driven...
متن کاملFractal Network Traac Modeling: Past, Present, and Future
The discovery of a fractal phenomenon in computer network and compressed packet video traac has added a new dimension to teletraac modeling and analysis. But some of the recent research eeort on the modeling and analysis of the fractal phenomena have generated results that are seemingly confusing or contradictory. The goal of this study is to correctly digest the recent contributions, examine t...

Source traac streams as well as aggre-gated traac ows often exhibit long-range-dependent (LRD) properties. In this paper, we model each traac stream component through the multiplicative multi-fractal counting process traac model. We prove that the superposition of a nite number of multiplicative multifractal traac streams results in another multi-fractal stream. This property makes the multifra...
متن کاملImplications of Self-Similarity for Providing End-to-End QoS Guarantees in High-Speed Networks: A Framework of Application Level Traffic Modeling
This paper is based on two novel research movements in the context of modeling, design, control, and management of future high-speed networks: (i) end-to-end QOS guarantees and (ii) the self-similar (fractal) nature of real-world traac. The former pertains to building an integrated framework within which end-to-end QOS guarantees are fully supported in an eecient way while taking advantage of t...
متن کاملFractional Brownian motion and data tra c modeling
We analyze the fractal behavior of the high frequency part of the Fourier spectrum of fBm using multifractal analysis and show that it is not consistent with what is measured on real traac traces. We propose two extensions of fBm which come closer to actual traac traces multifractal properties.
